Eliminating the need for animal shelters through community education

Our mission: To eliminate the need for inhumane and outdated animal shelters by educating, equipping, and empowering people to keep pets in loving homes — and out of the system.
About The Unsheltered Project
We believe a future without animal shelters is not only possible — it’s necessary. Every year, millions of dogs and cats enter overcrowded, underfunded facilities simply because their humans weren’t equipped with the knowledge, support, or resources they needed. But we’re here to change that.
This movement was born out of the idea that education is the most powerful tool in animal welfare. When communities understand what responsible pet ownership truly means — and have access to the help they need — fewer animals will be surrendered, abandoned, or lost in the system.
Through honest conversations, practical resources, and just the right amount of sass (thanks to our spokesdog Tito 🐾), we’re flipping the narrative: from shelter reliance to proactive care, from crisis response to prevention, from heartbreak to hope.
We’re not here to fix broken shelters. We’re here to build a world where they’re no longer needed.
I’m Tito, the spokesdog for The Unsheltered Project. I was found as a stray and sent to a very loud, very scary shelter. The staff knew that I was panicked so they called a rescue to come get me. My mom showed up to foster me and she fell in love with me. That was 6 years ago so I’m proud to be a foster failure. I’m here to share information and ideas so we can keep pets at home and eliminate the need for animal shelters altogether. Follow me on Instagram and TikTok for all of my important information on keeping animals at home.
